A thought I’m processing [on being ‘good’]
Two Wednesdays ago - I noticed the weird tendency to say “I’m good” when I’m defo not good. Two Wednesdays ago I had a rough day. It wasn’t until I said “I’m good” for the third time that day that I was like - what is wrong with me??
“How are you?” “I’m good” - I get that this is often just a way of politely entering a conversation, but it was strange to have this exchange multiple times last Wednesday given the context: I was in the ER having stroke-like symptoms and a hypertensive episode.
What is it that makes you respond to the question of ‘how are you?’ - as you’re walking into the emergency room with a directive to be seen STAT - with “I’m good?”
And it has me thinking about what a strange and powerful force culture is. Our limbs can be falling off our bodies, and we still follow the cultural scripts we’ve been handed. Belonging can be as essential as breathing to our brains.
